Brian Rust during deep brain stimulation surgery

Overview

Brian Rust, a lifelong trombone player, developed debilitating hand tremors that made everyday tasks and his passion for music nearly impossible. After medications failed, he opted for deep brain stimulation surgery at UW Health, where he brought his trombone into the operating room to mimic playing during the procedure and help guide the surgeons. The innovative approach allowed doctors to fine-tune the placement of brain implants, resulting in a dramatic reduction of his tremors. Now fully recovered, Rust has returned to performing and hopes his story encourages others with tremors to explore life-changing treatment options.
