Physician titles

• UW faculty physicians usually have two titles:
  • A University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health professorial title.
    • These titles reflect their faculty duties, like assistant professor, associate professor or professor
    • The university is their primary employer
  • A clinical specialty title that describes the care they provide at UW Health
    • These titles describe their area of practice, like cardiologist or surgeon.
• Use both titles when quoting or referring to a faculty physician expert
• Some experts have leadership titles as well
  • Leaders in the medical school may have additional leadership titles such as chair, associate dean, or dean
  • Leaders at UW Health hold titles that reflect their duties within the health system, such as senior vice president or chief quality officer
• Examples:
  • Correct: Dr. Jeff Pothof, chief quality officer, emergency medicine physician, UW Health, and professor of emergency medicine, UW School of Medicine and Public Health
  • Incorrect: Dr. Jeff Pothof, professor, UW Health, or Dr. Jeff Pothof, emergency medicine physician at UW School of Medicine and Public Health
  • Correct: Dr. Fahad Aziz, professor of medicine, UW School of Medicine and Public Health, and nephrologist, UW Health
  • Incorrect: Dr. Fahad Aziz, professor of nephrology (not a department)
  • Incorrect: Dr. Fahad Aziz, nephrologist, UW Health (faculty title is missing)
